How to Volunteer

Barb Food Mart operates an online order based food pantry with weekly distribution.  We have a variety of shifts available, learn more below.

Interested in joining us?  Register as a new volunteer and a staff member will contact you to get you scheduled.

  • Do I have to schedule in advance or can I just show up to volunteer?
We require all volunteers register and schedule with a staff member before coming to volunteer. This helps us plan to ensure we have enough help on every shift. We also need to be able to contact volunteers in the event of a bad weather closure or a Covid-19 exposure. Please use the new volunteer registration button and a staff member will contact you within 7 days.
  • Can I bring a team to volunteer?
Yes! We look forward to having your workplace, faith-based group, school, neighborhood, family and more volunteer with us. At this time our group opportunity is Thursdays from 8:30am-10:00am. Team leaders should register and we will contact you to schedule. We only accept one group on at a time on a Thursday along with our individual volunteers.
  • How old do you need to be to volunteer?
We welcome children ages 8 and older for our Tuesday and Wednedsay order packing shifts. For our Thursday Distribution shifts that involve interacting directly with our families and often working outside around car traffic, volunteers must be in high school.
  • I can't lift heavy boxes, can I still volunteer?
Yes! We have jobs for all abilities on our Tuesday and Wednesday shifts, including jobs for folks who would prefer to sit. Please contact us if you have specific questions about each volunteer shift.
  • I use Barb Food Mart, can I volunteer?
If you utilize Barb Food Mart please know that we do not expect anything in return - but you are more than welcome to volunteer. We value and appreciate the time that our community shares with the pantry and you are a valuable member of our community. We will not disclose to any other volunteers that you use the pantry, that information will remain private. To sign up please fill out the new volunteer registration form.
  • Can I take photos while volunteering?
We have a very strict privacy policy. This ensures our families feel comfortable at the pantry. If you need a group photo for work or individual use please check in with staff. We can find a time and place that ensures no families are pictured in photos.
  • Do families come inside the pantry?
We run Barb Food Mart as an online order based food pantry, but families can opt to use the park and walk up option to come inside the pantry and "shop" our limited free shopping shelves.
  • Can I complete my court compelled community service?
Right now we have availability on Thursday evenings for court ordered community service. We will ask you to sign our court mandated volunteer agreement when you arrive, and use our timesheet to track your hours. Please arrive at your scheduled time, sober from drugs and alcohol. Please note that we do not schedule volunteers that have committed a violent crime, harassment, or theft of any kind.
  • Can I complete community service for school?
We welcome high school and college students on any of our volunteer shifts. Please note that we will ask you to track your hours on our timesheet or a timesheet that you provide.
  • Can I get a letter confirming my community service?
We are happy to provide you with a letter confirming your community service hours. We ask for 7 days to provide the letter.
